The Albury Wodonga Kart Club Inc. was formed on the 27th of May 1985 after a small committed group of karters saw the need for a local club. Four years passed with these founding members working with local authorities to find a venue as they willing drove hours to satisfy their addiction.
Many sites were inspected but still no local track. As anyone will tell you, it is always darkest before dawn, so too was the birth of the track. When all seemed lost , the Wodonga Council and Albury Wodonga Development Corporation rallied to the rescue with a long lease for the current land.
The next three years saw much fund raising take place as $75,000 was generated the hard way via raffles and the like. A Gold medallion concept generated over $30,000 alone. A humble beginning for a great club.
The club opened the AWKC circuit at Sheathers Road and had it first club race meeting July 26th 1992. Membership Today the club has around 90 members. The average club day comprises approximately 65 competitors.
The AWKC has a commitment to oÂngoing education of all members who wish to seek it. Consequently we boast enough personnel to undertake any race day with all duties covered. It hasn’t always been easy but the AWKC has managed to have a solid number of members able to assist the running of club days and opens. The evidence was manifested in the level of competence shown at the 1996 Victorian Open Championship.
